How To Install A Software In Linux


Installation of a software/program in Rehat/Centos based system in 3 ways
  • RPM
  • YUM
  • Package Manager (GUI)

RPM (Redhat Package Manager)

It is a powerful package manager which can be used to build,install,query,verify,update and erase individual s/w pakages.

# rpm -qa <name of pakage>                                   //  for querying 
# rpm -e  <name of pakage>                                   //  for erasing
# rpm -ivh <name of pakage>                                //  for installing 
# rpm -ivh --nodeps <name of pakage>                 // install without dependency errors

YUM (Yellow Updates Modified)

Configuration file located in /etc/yum.conf  /etc/yum.repos.d/repositoryname.repo

# yum list updates                                               //  List updates.
# yum update                                                     //  To download and install all updates type the following command.
# yum list installed                                            //   List all installed packages.
# yum list installed httpd                                  //  Find out if httpd package installed or not.
# yum update <package-name>                      //  Check for and update specified packages.
# yum list <package-name>                            // Search for packages by name.
# yum install httpd                                          //  Install package called httpd.
# yum remove httpd                                       //  Remove package called httpd.
# yum list all                                                  //  Display the list of available packages.
# yum grouplist                                              // Display list of group software.
# yum groupinstall "Development Tools"     // Install all 'Development Tools' group packages.
# yum groupupdate "Development Tools"    // Update all 'Development Tools' group packages.
# yum groupremove "Development Tools"  //  Remove all 'Development Tools' group packages.
# yum whatprovides /etc/passwd                 //  Display what package provides the file.

Package Manager (GUI)

Go to Applications -> Add/Remove Software
